The Pygmy scale is one of the oldest and most distinctive voices in the handpan world. From the very first note, it pulls you into a soundscape that feels mysterious yet strangely uplifting. There is something ancient about it, like a memory carried on the air.
Built on a pentatonic foundation, the Pygmy scale carries a deep emotional richness. It speaks softly, but it speaks straight to the heart.
Sound & Feeling

• All notes revolve around a single harmonic centre, creating a strong emotional pull and a feeling of unity
• Lighter and more spacious than many 7-note scales, making it deeply calming and meditative

Musical Structure
• A pentatonic scale, omitting the 4th and 6th degrees
• Fewer notes allow for a wider pitch range and more expressive phrasing
• Extended versions with bottom notes can open the door to playing a full minor scale
Good to Know
Unlike scales like Kurd or Amara, the Pygmy begins with a second interval above the ding. This gives it a subtle chromatic flavour and adds to its unique, slightly otherworldly character.
